Great-grandfather George Phoenix (a young Navy mechanic) was a mechanic in the Navy and left Ireland with his uncle in 1822 in the midst of Ireland's division. He then traveled across South Africa by boat. After marrying the following year in South Africa, George had one son named George. Gavin had a brother called Tanit.
